The prostate is a male reproductive gland about the size of a walnut, located in front of the rectum and just below the bladder. It is wrapped around the upper portion of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out through the penis. The function of the prostate is to secrete a fluid that makes up part of semen.
Epoch Health screens for all conditions of the prostate, including enlarged prostate (BPH), prostate cancer and prostate infection. Although conditions vary by age, ethnicity and other factors all men are at risk for prostate problems. Research shows the five year survival rate for prostate cancer is near 100%, with the exception of advanced (stage IV) which drops it to 29%. Knowing your levels could mean the difference between living the life you want to live and enduring the complications of treatment.
Each free screening includes a lab for PSA levels which will be reviewed with you at the time of your Doctor’s visit in your local Epoch Health clinic. Because we know the physical exam helps to confirm the results of your screening we perform a digital rectal exam for confirmation. If levels and the digital rectal exam show cause for concern we refer patients to local Urologists for further testing and, if necessary, treatment.
At Epoch Health we help create awareness of the risks and educate about treatment options. At a minimum, it is critical that all men receive annual prostate screenings over the age of 50. For those who have a higher risk of prostate cancer, such as African-American men or those with a family history of Prostate cancer, screenings should begin as early as 35.
